WORD CLOUDS

There are many different websites available that will let you create your own word clouds. Here are 8 of them:

1.  Wordle (http://www.wordle.net)

One of the most common word clouds. It doesn’t have fancy shapes, but it works well at what it does.

2.  Tagxedo (http://www.tagxedo.com)

This word cloud allows you to create fancy-shaped clouds. Be sure to look through the examples!

This cloud is geared to younger students. Visit the website to see some examples of how this could be used.

4.  Tagul (http://tagul.com)

Like Tagxedo, Tagul lets you create word clouds in various different shapes. It’s very simple to use.

5.  Tagcrowd (http://tagcrowd.com)

Tagcrowd is more like Wordle in that you can’t choose the shapes, but it works quite well.

6.  Worditout (http://worditout.com)

Another simple word cloud generator like Wordle and Tagcrowd. You cannot make words into shapes.

Word Mosaic lets you chose the shape of the world cloud from a small variety of shapes.

8.  Wordsift (http://wordsift.com)

This is slightly different to the other in that the word cloud produced is pretty simple. But it does have the additional feature of linking each word to a visual thesaurus. Click on the word to get it’s meaning, and see how it is linked to other words.

WORD CLOUDS PROJECTS

For this web 2.0 project, you are to select 2 of the 8 websites to create 2 word clouds of your own. To prepare for these 2 projects and to get some ideas, do the following:

  • Visit EACH website and explore their galleries.
  • Use the galleries to come up with 2 different ideas for word clouds you will create.
  • One of your word clouds should result in a specific shape (animal, person, etc…).
  • The other word cloud does not have to take on a specific shape.
  • Your word clouds should contain A LOT of words…the more the better. Both of them should look as detailed as the examples you have seen on the websites.

You should be able to share your word clouds from any of the sites with embedded code (like we did the Prezi projects).

Put both word clouds on the same post (blog #9) with a short description of your topic and why you selected it. Be sure to reference the word cloud website in your paragraph for each cloud.
